Breathless Team: torn muscle

When you know how to change, but feel you have no reserves left

Signs to watch for

  • The team has already been through many changes.
  • It knows that AI will require another adjustment.
  • Weariness appears, along with little willingness to keep learning.
  • Phrases like ‘we’ve always managed, but this time I don’t know’.

The difference from the previous variant is decisive: the ability to change is there; it is the reserves that have been used up.

The biggest challenge to face

Recovering the capacity to move before asking the team to use it again.

The baggage it may bring with it

Sometimes, to understand how a team approaches the present, it helps to look at its history. Try to recognise whether one of these experiences appears in its past, in the ‘Explore the story the team carries with it’ path.

Weary Team →

It has faced change after change, gradually using up its energy. Faced with AI, it may feel it no longer has enough reserves to take on another transformation.

Disorientated Team →

Previous transformations have gradually reduced the meaning and clarity of its contribution. If weariness is added to the loss of direction, AI may be experienced as one more demand that the team no longer feels able to sustain.

Drained Team →

It has faced and got through many changes, carrying on working while energy and motivation wore away. The arrival of AI may bring out something that until then had stayed beneath the surface: this time we feel we have no resources left to draw on.

Where to focus right away

If it comes from the Weary Team → protect energy. Create real space to learn, without adding something new to an already excessive load.

If it comes from the Disorientated Team → rebuild meaning. Help the team recover the value of its contribution and a direction before asking it for a new investment of energy.

If it comes from the Drained Team → reactivate motivation and sense of agency. Proceed in sustainable steps and make small results visible, to bring back the feeling that it is worth investing and that the team can still make a difference.

A question to bring to the team

What space would we need to be able to face this change too without exhausting ourselves?

This is not a diagnosis. It is one possible lens through which to look at your team. A team may recognise itself in more than one profile.
